2008 Nominee Bios
President
Ron Sutherland is a Ph.D. student at the Nicholas School of the
Environment at Duke University. He has spent much of the last six
years investigating the habitat requirements of reptiles, amphibians,
birds, and mammals in the longleaf pine forests of eastern North
Carolina. Two years ago Ron worked with Allison Leidner to kick off
the series of graduate student meetings that led to last year's
creation of our Triangle SCB Chapter. He would enjoy serving as
chapter president this year to ensure that the organization continues
to thrive and prosper. Ron's priorities would be 1. adding more field
trips and events, 2. encouraging more participation by conservation
professionals, and thus more networking opportunities for students,
and 3. starting a clearinghouse for matching the research needs of
conservation groups with the interests of students and faculty at
local universities.
Vice-President
Lucas Joppa is a doctoral student in the Ecology department at Duke
University. He comes from northern Wisconsin, and obtained his
bachelors degree in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin.
Prior to arriving at Duke, Lucas and his wife spent two years in a
national park in Malawi as Peace Corps volunteers, and his current
research interests revolve around issues related to protected areas.
Lucas is the current Vice President of the Triangle SCB Chapter and he
is running to maintain his Vice President position. The Triangle
Chapter is a vibrant but young organization, and Lucas is excited to
provide continuity on the board and help ensure that the chapter's
2007-2008 success continues for another year.
Secretary
TyAnn Lee is a first year masters student in the Nicholas School's
Coastal Environmental Management program. Her interests focus on sea
turtle conservation and fisheries management, particularly bycatch
issues. She wants to be secretary to assist in the organization and
management of the Triangle Chapter of SCB to provide a forum for
people to get involved in local conservation issues.
Treasurer
Betsy Saylor is a Grants Specialist for The Nature Conservancy in
Durham. She is interested in joining the SCB board because she has a
passion for wild open spaces, building appreciation for the natural
gems of the Triangle area, and supporting the networking of
conservation-minded professionals and students in the region.
